We are confronted, out of time, out of any historical or political perspective, with this Other of Chinese culture. What the film shows is the very opposite of the picturesque, it’s an everyday life whose banality we perceive and yet which fascinates us. Exoticism? Yes, if it means recognising otherness, discovering oneself to be other than the other, and therefore as ‘exotic’ as the other.
